Travel Time: Washington DC

I am so excited to be heading to Washington DC tomorrow. Charlie Pants and I are heading there to teach Speech Level Singing lessons and will be there till Sunday evening. I have a couple of busy days filled with lots of singing and teaching and I am hoping to find some down time to relax and visit some of Charlie's and my favorite places in the DC metro area.

I am also hoping to get to review the Hotel Monaco-Alexandria, a Kimpton Hotel, in Alexandria, Virginia. Check out the Hotel Monaco-Alexandria's Adventures with Fido list.

Have you ever stayed there? Doesn't it look like the dream hotel to travel to and stay with your dog? I am waiting to hear back about such an adventure and will keep you posted if I get the honor.

Our Valentine's Day

Usually Paul and I don't really celebrate Valentine's Day. I kind of think it is a bogus holiday full of forced love confessions. This Valentine's Day we decided to get each other gifts (I think mostly we just used Valentine's Day as an opportunity to buy each other something we knew the other person would buy themselves anyway :)

I bought Paul a laptop messenger bag from J Crew. Very sexy casual business man look. And by the way did you know that J Crew offers a 15 % student discount. Love that.

Paul surprised me with a cello. I have wanted one for years and have always said that if I could do life over again I would become a concert cellist, so I guess now is my chance. The cello is old, and worn and beautiful. I have named it Hans because he is from West Germany and dates back to the early 1900s or something like that. So far I can play a pretty depressed version of Happy Birthday.

Charlie and Jack got some toys and I made out with Charlie for a good 5 minutes so he was very happy.

We also went to Qdoba to utilize their BOGO free dinner meal, all you have to do is kiss someone to get yours free. I let some lady kiss me so she could get two meals for the price of one. It was very exhilarating.

Charlie's Clues: How to Make a Dog Sleeping Bag

Today's Charlie's Clues includes a fun DIY project, a dog sleeping bag. Since Charlie is a service dog and goes with me everywhere I have to bring a blanket for him with me for 2 reasons.

1. The dog training organization said it is important to bring a blanket to a place of business such as a restaurant so that the dog hair stays contained on your mat and you bring the dog hair with you when you leave the business.

2. Charlie doesn't have an undercoat so he is always freezing.

Charlie loves my puffy coat and like to crawl inside and I had a genius idea, what if Charlie had his own sleeping bag to crawl into when we go places.

I found this children's coat size XL at Old Navy for only $10 (good time to buy as all coats are on clearance right now). I imagine using a puffy vest would even be more genius.

First I turned the coat inside out and sewed the bottom shut like so

Then I sewed the arms shut about one to two inches off of the seem where the sleeve meets the body of the coat

Cut off the left over sleeve

Flipped it right side out and Voila!

Charlie's Clues: Service Dogs in Las Vegas

As promised from before I thought I would share some tips on traveling to Las Vegas with a service dog.

1. Talk with hotel when you book your room and let them know you are traveling with a service dog so there will be no surprises when you arrive. (When you stay at a hotel with a service dog should not be charged any sort of pet deposit or pet fee and if they try tell them that is against the ADA).

2. Be prepared for a lot of people and crowds. I chose to only go out with Charlie during the day and early part of the evening because Vegas just gets too crowded at night. It is possible to go out with your working dog at night just remember to always be between people and your dog, meaning walk next to a wall if possible and have your dog skimming the wall so that people wont step on him or bump into him and so he doesn't solicit attention from people.

3. I would say for the most part the hotels & casinos seem to be well versed in ADA and service dog laws so I didn't seem to run into too many problems. Be prepared with an ID for your working dog just in case and make sure he/she is always wearing his/her working vest.

I just wanted to thank Glenn, a manager from the New York, New York hotel, who saw Charlie and me at the casino and through a great conversation and his interest in Charlie's abilities he bought me and my friend Tracy lunch at any restaurant at the hotel. We chose Gonzalez Y Gonzalez, a mexican restaurant, and the food and service was terrific.

I highly recommend the fresh guacamole made at your table. Tracy, Charlie, and I had a fabulous time and truly appreciate Glenn's generous hospitality. Next time I go back to Vegas I will most definitely be staying at the New York, New York hotel.

CP wanted nothing to do with my fancy drink, but here he is on the floor of Gonzalez Y Gonzalez.

I will say that if you are traveling with a service dog to Las Vegas the New York, New York hotel seems to be an ideal place to stay. The staff was extremely welcoming and friendly to Charlie and me. 4 stars and two paws up rating from Charlie Pants.

Well Punksatony Phil saw his shadow yesterday. Boo! 6 more weeks of blasted winter. I guess Phil was right cause today Charlie and I woke up to 12 or more inches of snow (mind you there was really no snow when we went to bed last night).

I think this weekend I am going to try snowboarding for the first time. I have been a skiier but I may want to switch to the dark side.

CP hates, hates, hates the snow and loves to poo in the house when there is snow outside. Can't wait for that!

Charlie's Clues: Dog Teeth Cleaning

A couple of weeks ago I decided that Charlie needed to get his nasty teeth cleaned. His breath was killing me and he hadn't had his teeth expertly cleaned in several years. I was leery of having him put under anesthesia to get his teeth cleaned and not to mention it is quite costly ($250-300). I heard about the Well Animal Institute here in Denver, Colorado that offers anesthesia-free pet teeth cleaning for only $150-165.

We decided to give it a try (well honestly Charlie had no decision in the matter).

This is how it went down.

We went to the vet that was hosting the Well Animals Institute teeth cleaning clinic and Cindy, one of the owners, took Charlie into a room just off of the waiting room. I was advised not to be in the room because the dogs do better when their owner isn't in the room watching, but I was allowed to observe through the door window. Cindy wrapped Charlie up tightly in a blanket (I completely forgot to take pictures but you can see how it is done via the video on the bottom of the blog), but it looks like this.

The tight blanket was to help Charlie feel safe and secure and so he couldn't wiggle around. Then she talked to him all soothing like and stroked his face and mouth and just started cleaning his teeth...and he let her. I was shocked. She used a regular looking dental tooth scraper. It was amazing and only took about 20-25 minutes. Charlie came out of the room a new man with sparkling teeth. Check them out. I highly recommend you try anesthestia-free teeth cleaning for your dog or cat.

Weekend Wag: Portlandia & Other Goodies

Happy Friday friends. I hope everyone has fun plans for today and this upcoming weekend. Currently I am lounging in my PJ's in my family room and staring out the window watching snow fall at a sharp diagonal and almost horizontal angle. I hope this won't continue all day.

CP (Charlie Pants) and I are going to meet up with a friend at good ol' Starbucks in a little bit and then head over to the gym to do a little Body Pump. I took CP to the gym yesterday and he was really great while I took a class until the very end when we were doing crunches and stretching. He got up and decided it was the perfect opportunity to lick my and nearby neighbors' faces. It was quite comical. Thank goodness everyone loves him or else his stinky breath could have been detrimental to their endorphin educing experience.

I am so happy to share this amazing story with you. It is a story about choosing your attitude even when life throws you a curve ball. My friend, Grant, recently celebrated his 12 year anniversary since his accident and while some might find that to be a somber day, he and his family celebrate this day and recognize his fantastic accomplishments. My life took a twist at age 46 after a ski accident left me a paraplegic. Now I’m 58 and still learning what joy each day can bring. You see it is all about attitude. If I had chosen a bad attitude, and those around me had allowed me to do that, things just wouldn’t be the way they are.

I discovered that even though I couldn’t walk, I could still enjoy the world around me. With the help of my family, and friends I returned to work after six months. I continued that work until I was able to retire. Working gave me the confidence that I could do many other things as well. Special programs allowed me to try skiing again. I have been kayaking; I have purchased an off road four wheeler and ridden in the back country. I even traveled to Hawaii and went snorkeling. Now these things I have mentioned take a considerable amount of effort and assistance from others around me but they are still a lot of fun.

So a friend asked if I would share about what it is like to be in a wheelchair. I have found that some people are uncomfortable talking with me, even sometimes looking at me. As a result I often look away from them to help relieve their pain. Some people however are very comfortable talking with me, often I find out these people have a family member or friend who is also in a wheelchair and so they do not find talking with me uncomfortable. Sometimes they even kneel on the ground and get down to my level; this is nice since looking up for a long conversation can make my neck really sore. So don’t feel sorry for me or others in a wheelchair, just talk to us like anyone else, get down on our level and look us in the eye it will be a nice gesture.

Now some people are worried about saying the wrong thing or asking to personal of a question. Don’t worry about that too much, it’s not such a big deal with me after all I have been through, what is important is that people respect me as a person, don’t run away from having contact with me. I’m pretty open about things so if you want to ask a question just ask, I imagine most people with disabilities are pretty much the same. I do think however some people may be touchy about barriers that prevent them from being able to do things. Can you blame them? When it gets harder to do almost everything in your life, it can get pretty frustrating and send you over the edge sometimes. So when those around us try and help remove those barriers it is greatly appreciated, believe me.

Things to consider:

If you see someone in a wheelchair waiting outside in a line and it’s cold, invite them inside because their circulation isn’t very good and once they get cold it takes forever to warm up.

All people with disabilities are not the same; if you have questions ask them.

Before you help someone you should ask if they want your help.

If you are talking to a person in a wheelchair for a long time, sit or kneel down so that you are at eye level with them so they don’t have to strain to look up at you.

Think of a person in a wheelchair as a person first, with feelings just like anyone else.

Travel Time:Service Dogs Disneyland or Disneyworld

I have been to Disneyland twice with Charlie the amazing seizure-alert service dog. Both times have been brilliant experiences. Disneyland has phenomenal customer service and employee training and I am thrilled to report that every interaction with a Disney employee was amazing. I was never discriminated against because I had a service dog. I actually saw about 5 or 6 other service dogs in the park during the 4 days we were there.

What do I do when I get to Disneyland?
When going to Disneyland with a service animal it is very important to check in at Guest Services (at Disneyland I believe Guest Services is in California Adventure on the left hand side right when you enter the park). The park likes to know you are there and gives you a special pass to assist with waiting in lines. Disney doesn't want the dogs to have to wait in the lines so you get to enter through the handicap line to ride the rides. Brilliant. This pass allows you and 5 other people access onto the ride.

Services for Disneyland Guests with Service Animals

What do you do with your service dog while riding the ride?
Well someone in your party has to stay with the dog while you ride the ride. When you get back that person can then ride the ride.

On some rides you can bring your service dog with you. Charlie rode almost all children rides (Small World, Peter Pan, Wild Toad, Sleeping Beauty, etc) and he even was allowed on the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. So fun. The service dog has to lay down at your feet while riding the ride.

Overall, Disneyland was a blast with my family. We rang in the New Year at Disney and just had an amazing time.

One of our trips to Disneyland was during the horrendously busy Christmas time. For Christmas my parents gave the whole family a trip to Disneyland! Charlie and I met my family at the Long Beach airport and were so excited to see all of them. Counting myself and nieces and nephews and in-laws I believe there was 16 of us total (2 were MIA as they couldn't get work off, my bro-in-law Aaron and my hubby Paul--sad for them). How do you get 16 people from the airport to the hotel if the hotel doesn't offer a shuttle from the airport and you don't need to or want to rent lots of cars? By traveling in a quadruple stretched hummer limo---that's how!

Charlie wasn't so sure about the Disney Characters.

Clever ideas to make life easier for pets and their families.

Tucked under the eaves, there is plenty of space for a large dog to nap or move around – even windows to watch the squirrels. The wood framed metal screen doors don’t appear to have hinges, which makes me wonder if they are pocket doors – both sliding to the left when hidden. That would be a great idea, since it would allow the doors to be out of the way and pets could enter anytime.

Another underutilized area in the home is the space under a staircase. An arched doorway makes this dog den even more special. Remember doors should always be constructed of a material that allows airflow so it’s more comfortable for them.

The door of this bed nook was crafted from a vintage grate and blends into the decor when closed. Thinking outside the box leads to one-of-a-kind features.

Laundry rooms are other good areas to corral pets. This one features a bed niche alongside their bathing sink. A doorless niche is perfect if pets don’t require containment and it keeps the bed from being underfoot. Be sure not to miss the funky dog wallpaper.

A kitchen remodel is another opportune time to include a kennel and feeding station. Here the resting spot is built up a step, creating a raised area for meals. Raised feeding reduces neck and back strain in larger breeds and also promotes healthy digestion.

A pair of vintage childrens’ chairs were altered to accept stainless bowls.

Travel Time:Service Dog in Las Vegas

All I can say is that New York New York hotel is amazing for service dogs and has an amazing staff and the spa at the Tropicana is horrendous with understanding service dogs and will be getting in major trouble. Let's just say the spa (Glow) at Tropicana denied me entrance cause of Charlie but did inform me that a different disability like being blind would allow me access. More to come later about my love for NY NY hotel and anger at Tropicana spa. CP and I are waiting at Vegas airport to fly back home to Colorado!

'Doga', which is said to appeal to your pet’s natural instinct to stretch, has become a new fad among New York dog-owners who believe it creates a unique bonding experience.

Classes involve stretching, massage and even chanting – at a pitch the dogs can mimic.

Suzi Teitelman has been teaching doga in New York and Jacksonville, Florida, since 2002.

She started the classes after noticing that her cocker spaniel Coali liked to lie beneath her when she practised traditional yoga at home.

She told MailOnline: 'Just as dogs pick up anxiety and negativity, they benefit from being a calm, happy environment with their owners.

'The owners often say that they've never see their pet so relaxed.'

The animals take part in the classes either by acting as weights to help balance their owners or by doing some of the moves themselves.

IN Chicago, Kristyn Caliendo does forward-bends with a Jack Russell terrier draped around her neck. In Manhattan, Grace Yang strikes a warrior pose while balancing a Shih Tzu on her thigh. And in Seattle, Chantale Stiller-Anderson practices an asana that requires side-stretching across a 52-pound vizsla.

Call it a yogic twist: Downward-facing dog is no longer just for humans.

Ludicrous? Possibly. Grist for anyone who thinks that dog-owners have taken yoga too far? Perhaps. But nationwide, classes of doga — yoga with dogs, as it is called — are increasing in number and popularity. Since Ms. Caliendo, a certified yoga instructor in Chicago, began to teach doga less than one year ago, her classes have doubled in size.

Not everyone in the yoga community is comfortable with this.

“Doga runs the risk of trivializing yoga by turning a 2,500-year-old practice into a fad,” said Julie Lawrence, 60, a yoga instructor and studio owner in Portland, Ore. “To live in harmony with all beings, including dogs, is a truly yogic principle. But yoga class may not be the most appropriate way to express this.”

Read it and then ask yourself "Where would I be without my dog?" I would be scared I was going to have a seizure just about anywhere, so Charlie I guess you are a keeper. Plus, who would I have to cuddle with? Paul? I dare say NO.

As part of his ongoing home-improvement project, my dog recently chewed the little tassels off the throw pillows on the couch. He was just ripping up the last one when I walked into the living room and he was so proud to show off his industriousness that he took the pillow and shook it like a rat. "See?" his expression seemed to be saying. "Where would you be without me?"

Without a dog, I would have tassels on my throw pillows instead of little stubs of yarn that look like small worms. The pillows seem to function just fine without the tassels, so perhaps it isn't a problem. Though they are called throw pillows, I never actually throw them, but I'm sure if I did my dog would approve. Maybe without tassels, they'll go farther when I throw them.

The question is an interesting one to contemplate, though. Have you ever asked yourself where you would be without a dog?

Without a dog, any time you accidentally dropped a piece of food on the floor, you'd have to bend over to pick it up.

Without a dog, squirrels won't have any reason to come into your yard to taunt.

Without a dog, you'd never have anyone in your life who thinks you invented bacon.

Without a dog, a lot of people will know you by your name instead of knowing you as your dog's parent.

Without a dog, you'd have to hump the neighbor's leg yourself.

Without a dog, you'd never have anyone demonstrate how important it is to stop every day and smell the roses ... and then lift your leg on them.

Without a dog, no one will listen to your opinions for more than a few minutes without interrupting to tell you their opinions, which you won't find nearly as interesting. A dog, on the other hand, thinks everything you have to say is absolutely brilliant and fascinating, especially if you're holding a piece of food while you're talking.

Try this with your spouse, and you'll see what I mean — a wife will give you maybe 5 minutes, tops, and it doesn't seem to matter whether you're waving a piece of chicken in front of her nose. There's also an inverse relationship between the number of years you've been married and the number of minutes she'll listen to your big, fat opinions. A dog, though, will always pay attention (unless you drop that chicken).

Without a dog, you might eventually forget what road kill smells like.

Without a dog, there's no one in the house who thinks driving with you to the store is one of the most fun things in the world. No one who is excited to the point of ecstasy to see you come back to the car with your bag of groceries. No one who thinks the drive back home with you is every bit as fun. In short, no one who can turn every mundane thing you do into a joyous occasion.

Without a dog, you'll be without at least one creature who thinks you are the smartest, most decent and heroic human being on the planet.

Without a dog, you might never know the joy of owning custom-chewed shoes.

Without a dog, some of your tennis balls might get really dry.

Without a dog, no one will think you are the most amazing cook in the world just because you can open a can.

Without a dog, you'd have to figure out what to do with your spare income. (With a dog, yourvetfigures out what to do with your spare income.)

Without a dog, you'll probably not take walks every day, and you'll probably never carry little bags for dog poo, either. Studies show that just adding those dog walks to your schedule can help you lose weight, live longer and battle stress (though no one has ever claimed that picking up dog poo does any of these things). Having a dog in your life lowers blood pressure and wards off depression. In short, without a dog you won't live as long or as happily.

So why would you want to be without a dog?

I watched the movie "The Family Stone" last night and it was all about everyone being together at Christmas. Seriously awkward movie, but I like it anyway. I may take my brother-in-law's advice and head to the beach for Christmas. I like that idea. Also, I want Paul to get a job that moves us to the beach. He is looking. Does anyone know of any jobs preferably West Coast? Something that deals with conflict resolution. I would move tomorrow to the beach if I could.

Okay lets talk Christmas Presents. I have no idea what to get anyone this year. I am wondering if I can take the "I am a poor grad student graduate and have to pay student loans off" approach. I desperately want to send out Christmas Cards this year. Is it tacky if I just send out a virtual Christmas card? You know-save the trees and all that jazz. Also, any thoughts on inexpensive but rocking Christmas gifts that I can buy online so they will ship easily to Utah?

Want to know something I want for Christmas-Paul does not want me to get one of these and I can understand why. I am sick and tired of having to carry Charlie everywhere in a blanket in the winter because despite my best efforts of making him wear sweaters and coats he is still freezing (he has no undercoat). Not to mention he always pees on everything I put him in. So I want to get a dog stroller. I know ridiculous. But I want one anyways- as long as I don't look like her. That is ridiculous.

Charlie Goes To NYC

Back in November, I was asked to come and teach some vocal workshops for a couple of churches in Richmond, VA, East End Church and Bon Air. So I packed up Charlie's and my suitcase and flew to Washington DC. I taught singing lessons in DC for a day and then headed down south to Richmond, taught my workshops, and then headed back to DC. The next morning, Paul, Charlie and I took the Tripper Bus, an inexpensive and awesome way to get from DC to NYC, and 4 hours later found ourselves in the heart of Times Square.

It was a cold day in NYC and Charlie wasn't all too happy to be traipsing around the city in only his little green coat. If he could of had it his way he would have been wrapped in a down blanket and carried everywhere. After lugging our suitcases around for what seemed like a zillion blocks, we found our hotel, Yotel. Have you heard of it? It is some new hotel in NY that specializes in affordable luxury. I thought it was perfect. We paid $150 for the night and were on the corner of 42nd Street and 10th Ave and could see the Hudson from our window. Plus the staff was fantastic, especially Michelle, about allowing a service dog to stay at the hotel, they were just in love with Charlie. It is always so nice to go to a hotel that knows the ADA laws and I don't have to spend 10 minutes arguing with them about why Charlie can stay there.

Our room was tiny, but what NYC hotel room isn't when you are trying to stay on the cheap. It was extremely clean. The bed was pretty snazzy as it rolled up during the day like a couch and down at night all by the touch of a button. Here is what our room looked like.

The hotel also offered complimentary kitchens on each floor with an awesome and FREE fancy schmancy coffee/hot chocolate machine whipping up a variety of splendid drinks.

While in NY we went and saw Mary Poppins the musical, which was fun but I wish we had gone to see something a little more exciting like Rock of Ages. But I think the highlight of our trip was 2 things.

1. we ran into some old friends from our old neighborhood in Utah. I mean we litterally ran into them. Had no idea they were in NYC and bumped into them in Times Square. How funny. Out of millions of people jammed into that small area, who would have thought we would see someone we know.

2. We went sailing. We took the Schooner Adirondack and went for a sunset sail. We sailed past Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and saw the Brooklyn Bridge. It was such a fun way to see the Statue of Liberty. The captain passed out wool blankets and served wine, beer, soda, and Champagne, and you could bring snacks, if you'd wanted to. Charlie was freezing and wrapped up nice and warm in his blanket, but Paul and I had a magical time. On the way back to the dock the sun had set and all the lights in NYC were twinkling and it was so magical. I highly recommend it. I think we paid like $60 a person for a 2 hour sail.

The Tree is Up

Okay lets take a vote. Who has already put their Christmas tree up? Who put their tree up a week ago? If you answered yes to the second question you are not alone. I love Christmas decorations and so I have posted some pictures (crappy iphone quality) of my house right now. Charlie helped me put the low ornaments on the tree and Jack tried to eat all the ornaments within reach. I already feel like I have two kids.

I Love Flying Southwest Airlines

Last week I went home to visit the fam in good ol' Salt Lake City, Utah, or as some refer to it, the promised land:) I really get nervous to fly with Charlie without Paul around because

1. It is more difficult. Especially going to the bathroom. Dragging in a dog and luggage into any itty bitty toilet stall cause the handicapped ones are never available (frowny face to those that steal them) is never fun and I am pretty sure Charlie ends up getting his face smashed either against the toilet as we enter or the door as we exit.

2. People are rude to me when Paul isn't around. I mean my husband is wickedly sexy and strong (ish) looking, but for some reason no one bugs me when he is around. I think it is cause he has a shaved head. Everyone must think he is some skin headed freak who will hurt at any bad comment my way. Works for me.

3. I usually have to argue with the ramp agent for the bulk head seat so I end up at the back of the plane which is a disaster (thank you United Airlines for sucking so bad. PS. I will never fly with you again cause you lack customer service and human skills)

4. I end up sitting next to weirdos that make me feel like I have leprosy instead of seizures.

This time was different. First of all, they checked my bag for free so I didn't have to deal with that which made 1. Going to the bathroom, much easier. Additionally, Southwest ticket check-in woman called the ramp agent to let her know I was coming and so they saved me a seat in the very front of the plane (literally saved it with tape over the seat and a sign that read DO NOT OCCUPY) so that Charlie would have room on the floor in front of me. And they gave me a blue pre-board ticket so I could get on the plane first. Fixing problem number 3. And number 4 was just pure luck. I sat next to a charming man named Jesse who found Charlie to be amazing and he didn't spill coffee on me or reek of cigarettes like the guy I sat next to the last time I flew. Plus Jesse is related to the talented blogger Nie Nie who I read regularly and you should too.

I highly recommend flying Southwest if you travel with a service dog. I mean 5 stars, two-thumbs up, get it while it is hot kind of review.

Thanks Southwest for being one of the only airlines with customer service.

The Life of Little Charlie Pants

Today I am grateful for Charlie and how much he makes my heart melt and makes me laugh. I came across this post I did on my blog Bicycle Built For Two and had to repost it cause it is so dang funny. This was about two years ago when I was beginning graduate school.

Ah To Be Charlie

Now that it is getting rainy and colder in Virginia, I have had to come up with a way to take Charlie with me, since he has to come with me as my seizure- alert service dog. I am going for trying to keep him warm and covered from the rain. Charlie has no undercoat and is freezing all the time.

I have tried

1. Sweaters: problem is they don't work cause Charlie pees on them and then they stink-plus his feet are always cold.

2. Baby sling: I sewed him a baby sling wrap thing, problem is that he is too fat to carry when walking the mile to the metro.

3. Dog stroller: I didn't actually get him one of these, but totally wanted one until I realized people would want to see my cute baby and out would pop Charlie.

4. Rolling scrapbook supply carrier (thanks Melissa for letting me steal this from you): this works perfectly. I can put my laptop and schoolbooks in here plus Charlie lays down inside with a blanket and is covered up from the rain. He is so spoiled. This way I don't look like too big of a rich babe/Paris Hilton wannabe cause no one can actually see him when I am pulling him around outside.

This is Charlie relaxing while I am in class.

If only I can get Paul to carry me around in a big rolling case with a blanket, my life would be complete.

Human Foods That Are Toxic to Dogs

Many of you may know this, but I thought I would share it anyways. Here is a list of toxic human food and reasons why they are harmful to your pet. I think the one to really remember is the grapes and the raisins, because for the longest time I did not know they were harmful and I used to give these as treats to some of my past family dogs.

1. Onions (Both onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient Thiosulphate. But onions are more of a danger. Many dog biscuits contain *small* amounts of garlic – garlic contains less of this toxin so huge amounts would need to be consumed to be toxic. I think it is about time we all read about the characteristic traits of Charlie dogs, the min-pin. I found this synopsis of Charlie dogs on Martha Stewart's website (go figure).

Known as the "King of the Toys," the Miniature Pinscher is a compact, smooth-coated dog who is alert, spirited and fearless, with a unique high-stepping, hackney-like gait. With his black and rust coloring, cropped ears, and docked tail, he resembles his cousin the Doberman Pinscher, but he is not a miniature Dobie. Coat colors include red, stag red (red with black hairs), black with rust markings, or chocolate with tan.

A Look Back"Pinscher" means "Terrier" in German, and the Miniature Pinscher is a distinctly German breed that originated several centuries ago as an efficient barnyard ratter. The Miniature Pinscher is reported to include the Dachshund and Italian Greyhound among its ancestors, along with the shorthaired German Pinscher.

Right Breed for You?The Miniature Pinscher can really spice up a person's life. This dog is small, but he doesn't know it! He's quick and active, with a lively curiosity. They are good family companions and look out for their family, bravely challenging intruders with their bold, insistent bark. Stainless Steel Dog Bowls---Did you Know?

While at the vet a couple of weeks ago, the vet looked at Jack's chin and said that he had an infection on it and asked "what kind of bowls does he eat and drink out of?" I told her we use porcelain bowls and she told me that we needed to switch to stainless steel. I guess bacteria can grow on the dog bowls and so when they are drinking water they make scrape the side with their chin and can get an infection, or if they already had an infection it will keep getting bacteria inside and wont heal.

So all you dog lovers out there, switch your dog water dish to stainless steel and if you want it to match maybe switch the food dish over too.

Stainless steel surface will not absorb smells, does not stain, and is easy to clean and disinfect. Most dogs won't pick up or try to chew on stainless steel so the bowls stay shiny, clean, and new. They're also heavier so they're less likely to tip over and they are dishwasher safe.

I want this one...too bad Jack and Charlie are boys. Maybe I can find one with red polka dots.

Tools and MaterialsFelted cardigan (For instructions on felting a sweater, take a look at this felted hat craft.)

Tailor's chalk
Sewing pins

Blunt-ended tapestry needle
Black wool yarn
Optional: pearl or crystal beads

Wool Cardigan Dog Coat How-To1. Before making the coat, measure your dog to make sure the felted cardigan is big enough to be cut down to fit. Turn cardigan inside out.

2. Mark sweater with tailor's chalk in two places: 1) In a straight line from the underarm, and perpendicular to the sleeve seam, so that the sleeve forms a cap. 2) Right above the ribs of the cuff (save cuffs). Cut where marked.
3. Put cardigan on dog, inside out.

4. Pin a dart from the neck down the shoulder and onto the cap sleeve. (This reduces the width of the armhole.) You may need to remove 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches of knitted fabric. Pin along dog's chest and stomach, taking up most of the excess knitted fabric.
5. Carefully remove cardigan from the dog. On a sewing machine, stitch down where pinned (along shoulder and back of cardigan), and then trim the excess.

6. Slip the cuff inside the end of the sleeve and sew the cuff on, using a tapestry needle with a blunt end, black wool yarn, and decorative running stitches.

7. For added decorative detail, sew pearls or crystals to the neck along the base of the neck ribbing, starting at the button band. For decorative effect, make one running stitch in between each pearl.

Handicap Dog's Wheelchair Stolen

One month ago today I wrote about a handicapped dog whose wheelchair was stolen from his normally safe front lawn in a leafy Boston neighborhood, leaving him unable to move. Today I bring you news about a Rhode Island dog who had the rotten fate.
Jack, a lab-shepherd mix, lost the use of his back legs because of two herniated discs. The introduction of a doggy wheelchair three months ago changed his life. His owner, Marilyn Proulx, told NBC News 10 that the wheelchair was a godsend that gave Jack mobility. She said he was even able to run with it because he had strong front legs. He loved taking long walks. She said the chair made him whole.
But all that changed when someone stole the wheelchair from the side of Proulx’s house. Now walks involve Proulx hoisting his back end up with a sling. It’s taxing for woman and dog.
“I think mentally, emotionally, physically, it’s awful. He can’t take walks anymore. I have to help him in and out of the house with a sling,” Proulx said. “I just can’t imagine his living the rest of his life without being able to walk anymore.”
The good news is that Jack has an angel in the form of a dog wheelchair company watching out for him. I read under the NBC News 10 story a comment from Handicapped Pets, offering to donate a brand-new customized wheelchair to Jack. This is one great company. It did the same with the Boston dog whose wheelchair was stolen. (See update below.)

Here’s what Handicapped Pets wrote: “HandicappedPets.com would be happy to provide a replacement dog wheelchair for Jack at no charge…The Walkin Wheels is fully adjustable, so we can send it right out to Jack today – he can be back to his walking routine tomorrow.” I don’t see any indication about whether Proulx had gotten this amazing message yet, but I’m sure by the time you see this, word will have reached her.
A happy ending to a sad story. As I asked in the post about the Boston dog: Who would steal a dog’s wheelchair?!
Update 7/8/11: We just got word that a company called Eddie’s Wheels was hoping to donate one of their custom wheelchairs to Jack. (They said Jack had been using one of their custom-built wheelchairs already.) According to Eddie’s Wheels, before the company could contact Jack’s owner, someone donated their deceased dog’s wheelchair to Jack. “Serendipitously, it was just the right size and also neutral balanced,” reads an update on their website. So looks like there are plenty of generous and caring companies and individuals out there!

Dog Potty for Patio: Build Your Own

Well as mentioned in the previous post Jack had emergency surgery. He can't do stairs for the next 2 weeks while he recovers. We live in a 3 floor townhouse so this poses quite a problem. We went to the hardware store and bought supplies to make our own potty spot on our back deck. I had blogged about other patio potties I had seen online, but ours was much cheaper to make and uses real grass.

This is what you need

1 4'x4' peg board (about $13)

2   2"x4"x96" ($2.12 a piece)
plastic sheeting (we used durable plastic leaf bags)
2 bags of potting soil ($2 a bag)
2 rolls of sod ($5 a roll)

Here is what you do.

Lay the peg board down on the deck and cover it with the plastic sheeting or bags. Staple gun it or secure it under the peg board so the sheeting doesn't slip. Create a trim around the board using the 2x4's and secure in place. Empty the two bags of potting soil on top of the plastic cover peg board.

Roll the 2 strips of sod down. You will have a little extra that you will need to cut off.

Since Jack is a boy dog we bought a little plant for him to aim at to ensure he will pee on the grass. We also bought a hose attachment for our sink so we can spray off the grass and water it daily to make sure it doesn't die.

Jack Emergency: Blocked Intestines

So 3 days ago we went to this great Natural Pet Food Store called Whole Pets in Broomfield, CO because we got a free dog wash coupon in the mail. While we were there I was discussing Charlie's horrible teeth and the plaque buildup and they recommended a bone for him to chew on as it helps get rid of plaque. We figured since we were buying Charlie a bone we had to buy Jack a bone. We left the store with a small bone for Charlie and a big knuckle bone for Jack. The bone really helped to get Charlie's teeth clean.

Fast forward to the next day. Jack is acting lethargic, vomiting up bile, and is stretching a lot. We were worried that maybe he ate some of the bone we had given him. We found the bone and about half of the thing was missing. We took him to an Animal Hospital around the corner from us called Arrowhead Animal Hospital. Since we have just moved to the Denver/Boulder area, we didn't have a vet and were a bit tentative to go just anywhere. We couldn't have been happier with Arrowhead Vets. It turned out Jack had a major blockage in his intestines and need emergency surgery to remove it. The vet was going to have to open him up, cut into his intestines, remove the blockage, sew up the intestines, and the recovery was going to be intense not to mention the procedure quite expensive (about $2600). But what do you do when you love your dog like a child and it is either this or risk his intestines exploding and him dying.

So we gave the ok for surgery and I was sobbing as we left the vet. Turns out when they started the surgery and opened up Jack's stomach, the lodged substance had enough room to move through the intestines and into his colon so the vet didn't have to do surgery on his intestines. The vet tech slept the night with Jack and I guess Jack whined the whole night so the tech ended up sleeping on the floor cuddled up next to Jack. When we went back yesterday to pick him up, the whole vet hospital was in love with Jack and said they had to take turns petting him because he was lonely and demanding attention. If Jack only knew he was a dog and not a human I think he would be crushed. Turns out the final bill was much lower due to the less extensive surgery ($1450 instead of $2600). It turns out that 3 pieces of bone were lodged in his intestines and he pooped them out later. One was about the size of a silver dollar. That was one expensive bone. I guess we have learned our lesson, no bones for our dogs.

Thanks Arrowhead Animal Hospital for taking such good care of our Jack and for the vet Kristin Hrenchir, DVM for being so sweet, kind and great at her job. Dr. Hrenchir even came in on her day off to update us on Jack. What great service. Jack's very own snuggle buddy at night and a loving and caring staff and vet.

If you live in the Denver/Boulder area, I highly recommend you bring your pet here. They truly love animals and take the extra special step to ensure the animal is healthy and the owners are happy.

Jack is doing well. He has 28 staples in his stomach and about a 6 to 7 inch cut in his abdomen. Poor Jack. He can't do stairs and we live in a 3 floor townhouse so we created a patio potty for him. I will post that next.

A Little Bad News But Lots of Great News

Bad News:
Sadly to say I had a seizure on Saturday. The stress of moving to a new city has that effect on me.

Great News:

While at the Denver Greek Festival, Charlie and I were chilling at a table taking a break from the heat. I started to feel a bit weird (I call it seizurey and for anyone who has seizures knows exactly what I am talking about) and all of the sudden Charlie started to bark at me. He started quietly and then it got louder and louder and more persistent. I thought maybe he was thirsty, but that wasn't it. Paul and I hightailed it out of there and we made it to the car and Paul started driving home. I had one a couple of minutes into our drive. I feel fine and no harm done thanks to the amazing Charlie giving me about a ten minute warning so I could get to a safe and private place to have my seizure. I slept the rest of the evening as I felt like I had ran a marathon.

I am doing great now and am back up and running. I am so proud of Charlie for several reasons.

1. He is a bit rusty on sensing the seizures as I had one a year ago in Berlin, Germany and he wasn't with me then and the one before that was a year before so it had been 2 years since he had been around a seizure.

2. He just rocks and everytime he is right.

3. Having him makes having seizures really no big deal.

While it has traditionally been posed that the dog is man’s best friend, we know many of you also reserve that honor for your two-wheeled companion—your bicycle. Like a good dog, a good bicycle is quiet, a provider of comfort during rough times, and easy on your carpet. But for those who have both a special canine and a special bicycle in their life, a common dilemma is how to give both of them attention at the same time. We’ve experimented with this extensively at the peopleforbikes.org office; here’s what we’ve learned.
There are a number of ways to include your dog in a bike ride, whether it’s for utilitarian or recreational reasons. It’s possible to tote small, well-behaved dogs in a basket or a messenger bag. One of our Twitter followers, Zak, sent us this photo of his dog riding in his rear bike basket. Another follower, P.J., has a photo of his adorable pup riding in a front bike basket set as his profile image. PFB supporter Timbuk2 even makes a backpack designed to carry dogs called the Muttmover.

Angela won a PFB messenger bag and used it for her Yorkie.
For larger canines or for those who can’t be trusted to sit contentedly in an open basket, you can use a bike trailer like a Chariot or a Burley. Again, there are dog-specific options on the market—the Tail Wagon and the Croozer Dog are two examples. These enclosed trailers keep frisky dogs safe while you’re biking and can haul larger mutts (and groceries too!).

Dog Potty for Patio

Now that Paul and I have moved to Colorado, I don't know if I mentioned that but yes Paul and I now live in Denver, Colorado, we live in a townhouse without a yard, which means every time the dogs need to do their business we have to take them outside. It isn't so bad now, but I am sure soon enough if might get annoying especially since I am used to just opening up the back door and letting them run wild in the yard. So I googled "dog potty for patio" and found this amazing device called the Porch Potty for Dogs. I am not sure if we will buy this or just make our own version. Check this thing out. It has its own fire hydrant and sprinkler system. This is very similar to the potty stations in the airports.

NEWARK, N.J. – When an emaciated pit bull found at the bottom of a trash chute in New Jersey was rushed to a veterinary emergency room last month, doctors there thought he would be dead within the hour.

Instead, the scrappy pup, nicknamed Patrick, has defied the odds and is getting stronger by the day.

"He is a tremendous fighter," said Dr. Thomas Scavelli, the director and founder of the Garden State Veterinary Specialists, the pet hospital in Tinton Falls where Patrick is being treated. "There are very few animals, or any life form, that could have gone through and survived what he has, and really never looked back."

Hospital staffers, who named the dog for his reddish fur and because he was found the day before St. Patrick's Day, have been chronicling his progress on their website and a Facebook page that has garnered fans from around the world. He's received hundreds of emails, donations, gifts and letters from those inspired by his tale of survival.

When Patrick was brought to the hospital after being rescued by officials at the Associated Humane Societies, he was so starved, emaciated and dehydrated he was curled into a ball, unable to walk or stand. His ribcage protruded, he weighed about 20 pounds — roughly 30 pounds less than average — and was covered in sores with parts of skin hanging off him, according to Patricia Smillie-Scavelli, Thomas Scavelli's wife and the administrator of the hospital.

"Everyone thought that, you bring in an animal like that, that looks like it's really just a corpse, you put it to sleep," Smillie-Scavelli said. "But of course, he looked up at you with those eyes, and you say: How can you give up on this dog? How can you, when he's not giving up on life? So, we gave him that second chance, and he has just run with it, and thrived."

Today, after weeks of emergency measures that included a transfusion of three pints of dog blood, a special diet, medicine and physical therapy, Patrick continues gaining weight — currently weighing just over 29 pounds — is finally eating solid food, and enjoys taking outdoor walks in the sun and playing with the many toys that well-wishers have sent him.

Grad School Graduation

I graduate on May 20 from my Master of Arts in Arts Management program. I can not wait. I have loved this degree and am really happy with the education I have received from my program. All I need now is to find a job using my degree :)

I am planning on walking at graduation with Charlie. My cap and gown will be green and I want to make Charlie a graduation hat to wear as he walks with me across the stage.

I found this great tutorial on Little Birdie Secrets and thought I would share it with you. Now all I need is to go shopping for green felt.

how to make a graduation cap

Cue "Pomp and Circumstance." Yes, it's that time of year again. Stacy's son and my son go to the same preschool, and today was their last day of school. Since there wasn't a formal graduation ceremony, one cute mom took it upon herself to plan a wonderful program, complete with little felt graduation caps. I believe she bought them from Oriental Trading Company, but when we saw them we thought, like we always do, "we could makes those!" And now you can, too. This size was perfect for our five-year-olds, but it also fit Stacy's little one and ME! The elastic is the key.

Felt Graduation Cap Tutorial

What you'll need:

*Felt (about 22" by 22")
*Needle and thread
*Small piece of elastic, about 1 inch long
*Sewing machine
*Embroidery floss or yarn
*Piece of light cardboard or heavy card stock (see link to video for more information)

1. Cut two pieces of felt that are 9 inches by 9 inches. Cut one piece of felt that is 2 ½ inches by 22 inches.

2. Sew the long band (2 ½ inches by 22 inches) together at the short side using a ¼ inch seam Turn inside out so the seam is on the inside of the band

3. Fold one of the 9 x9 squares in half to make a triangle and again to make a smaller triangle.

4. Measure 3 inches from the point of the triangle and make a mark on one side, again in the middle, and again on the other side of the triangle. Cut out the center of the triangle in an ice cream cone shape using your 3 inch marks as a guide

5. Pin the square piece with the circle cut out to the band. Sew together using a ¼ inch seam.

6. Place the whole square piece on top of the hat and sew all four sides together. Please note that I accidentally left my seam on the outside in this picture. Don’t do that or you will be able to see the seam. It should be on the inside of the hat.

7. Cut a piece of elastic about 1 inch long. Sew this to the inside of the hat over the seam. As you sew, pull the elastic as tight as possible. Really stretch it out. You want it to bunch back up when you are done sewing. This will help the hat stay on.

8. Make a tassel using your floss or yarn and piece of cardboard. You can use this great video tutorial (or watch it here) if you need help.

9. Using needle and thread, sew your tassel to the top center of the hat.

Refuge from the Rain

I was taking Charlie to downtown DC to meet up with some friends and we got stuck in a torrential downpour. While walking for 2 miles in the rain and carrying Charlie in my coat, I found myself mumbling words i wouldnt say around my mother and realized I needed to find some refuge. As my shoes sloshed on the sidewalk, I rounded a corner and found the most charming coffee house/bakery called Buzz Bakery. The ambiance was hip, the staff was fantastically friendly to me and Charlie, and the treats were heavenly. I bought myself a massive chocolate chip cookie, a hot drink, and sat myself down on a comfy couch in the corner. After a sugar buzz, a half hour of people watching, listening to stress calming Michael Buble, and ten minutes spent under the hand dryer I am ready to adventure out again.

Charlie's birthday

I forgot to post about Charlie's Birthday! We were in Asheville NC when he turned 6 so we bought him and Jack some doggie cupcakes at Three Dogs Bakery! I really loved this store. They had tons of yummy looking treats which are made with all natural ingredients so even humans can eat them. I kind of wanting to try something, but I didn't.

Okay in my search for a picture of human rain boots, which by the way if you check HERE you will see the raddest rain boots ever that I got a couple days ago, I ran across this picture of dog rain boots.

I need to run out immediately and buy these for my two dogs, Jack and Charlie, seeing as I already own the matching pair of dogs,

now they need a matching set of waterproof rain boots. That is seriously too funny. What do you think-yes or no on dog shoes?

Charlie and I Went and Saw "Unknown"

Because of mine and Paul's jobs we don't get to go on dates in the evenings or on the weekends so today he took the morning off and I didn't have teach until 2:30 and we went an saw the movie Unknown. Think Bourne Identity meets Taken. Unknown stars Liam Neeson, January Jones and Diane Kruger.

I really liked the movie. There were a lot of twists and turns in the movie and I was captivated the whole time. Plus, I really like Liam Neeson he is a fabulous actor.

I am also pretty sure that Charlie enjoyed the movie too. He just laid in my lap wrapped in his blanket. I am always amazed how good Charlie is when we go out in public. I always think the loud noises in movies will freak him out, but they never do. When he was little and in training we took him to go see Star Wars and when Darth Vader came on the screen Charlie jumped up and barked really loudly at the screen. That was his only movie outburst. I guess he could just feel his dark side or something.

So if you are thinking of going to a movie this weekend I would highly recommend Unknown, especially if you are lover of intense movies. I also saw Just Go With It last Saturday. Charlie was my date for this movie. It was cute. I am not sure if it is worth the expensive date night ticket price, but I do think it is worth seeing.

Denied Pre-Board by United Airlines

Last Sunday, February 13, I was flying from LAX to Dulles on United Airlines. Because I travel with a service dog I have to check in at the ticket counter to show identification of the dog. While waiting in line, the next available ticket lady took one look at me with my dog Charlie and said "Ma'am who is standing behind you?" I had no idea who they were, but she said "I will help you next" speaking to the people behind me. Obviously she wasn't interested in helping me. I was standing in line, but for some reason I was bypassed. I am not sure what her reason was.

When I was at the gate to board the plane the same woman was serving as the ramp agent. My boarding ticket said boarding group 4, but in all my years of traveling with Charlie I have been allowed to pre-board. Actually, most airlines inform when I check-in that I can pre-board so that I have more time to get adjusted in my seat and not feel rushed down the aisle. When the ramp agent said that they were boarding first class passengers and those with special needs I got in line. When I got up to the front and asked if she has asked for special needs passengers she took one look at me and said "You aren't in a wheelchair" and made me stand off to the side. I kindly asked her if I could please preboard because travelling with a service dog is a bit stressful and I take longer to get down the aisle and she just waved me off and said she would preboard in a minute. I am pretty sure that when they say passengers with special needs that is the call for preboard and I am also fairly confident that I fall under that category.

She continued to call up boarding groups 1 and 2. I stood where she told me to stand feeling like a fool off to the side as an example of the disabled girl who didn't understand directions. It was humiliating. I kept asking her if I could board and she kept waiving me off. Finally, another ramp agent walked passed me and I kindly asked if this flight would be preboarding. She informed me that preboarding has already taken place. I asked her if I could preboard eventhough my ticket said boarding group 4 and she said of course. So I headed down the ramp.

By the time I got on the plane it will very packed. Some passengers boarding accidentally stepped on Charlie, which could have been avoided if I was allowed to board early. As I was boarding the plane I was greated by a flight attendent. I explained to her that I was unhappy with the ramp agent and told her what had happened, and instead of her being helpful or apologetic she gave me a fake plastic smile and said "oh no compassion?" I felt so stupid and frustrated. As I navigated my way to my seat I held up the line of other passengers for quite a while while I walked down the aisle, put my luggage away, and got my service dog situated. By the time I was sitting down I was in tears.

Thanks United for discriminating against a person with a disability and singling them out in front of a group of people. It really helped me feel more like a freak than I already feel most of the time. I don't know why this woman choose to single me out that day and make my life more difficult, but it was truly unfortunate. Maybe she doesn't have to let me preboard, but I wasn't asking for much and I obviously needed assistance. My ticket was even marked as needing assistance.

I guess my advice to those traveling with a disability is to choose a different airline. I have had great customer service with Delta and Jet Blue.

I love flying out of Dulles Airport in Washington DC because they have 2 service dog potty stations right in the terminals. The one Charlie used was by gate D1 (between gate D and C) and I believe there is another one between gates A and B.

This potty station really helps out when we have a long flight ahead of us. Recently we went to Anaheim to go to Disneyland and the flight was 5 1/2 hours so it was great to potty Charlie right before we boarded the plane. I wish more airports would design a room like this for those traveling with a service dog.

Doctor's Service Dog Taken Away by Canine Companions for Independence

(Pic:) - CEO of Canine Companions for Independence Corey Hudson. Mr. Hudson is also the North America President of Assistants Dogs International. Mr. Hudson ordered the wrongful repossession of a service dog from Dr. Gael Yonnet.

Salt Lake City, Utah - Dr. Gael Yonnet was severely injured in a snow boarding accident that left him paralyzed. Dr. Yonnet sought the independence that a service dog could give him and he applied for a service dog with Canine Companions for Independence. He was partnered with Elon.

Dr. Yonnet is a very active individual and he enjoys going on trails in the Rocky Mountains with Elon after long days working in a hospital.

Dr. Yonnet's service dog was taken from him a week ago by Canine Companions for Independence because Elon was not on a leash in examine rooms or on trails in the Rockies. All the time Elon stayed by Dr. Yonnet's side.

Corey Hudson nor has any person from Canine Companions for Independence returned phone calls to Dr. Yonnet or his thousands of supporters. Dr. Yonnet wants Elon back working for him.

On Friday February 18, 2011 I called you in the morning to offer to meet directly with you here in Santa Rosa at the CCI Campus with me and the CCI managers responsible for Elon. I suggested we could utilize a facilitator to attempt to understand each other’s position on the issue of managing your working relationship with Elon. I further offered to have CCI pay your travel expense and stay at the Schulz Campus dormitory. In that conversation, you declined to meet with me or anyone from CCI saying that you had told a CCI staff member that you would create a “public relations nightmare” for CCI and that now you were going to continue to do just that. Similarly, you said you would “destroy CCI” and that you would “bury CCI.” You further stated that you had no respect or trust for CCI’s staff and that you had told a CCI staff person you would bring a “reign of terror” to CCI.

This is a very unfortunate situation. I am a big believer in mediation and believe that it may have been a way to help resolve this situation. Dr. Yonnet I am sorry for your loss. Don't stop fighting.

Service Dog Taken Away

I don't know what I would do if this happened to me. Thank goodness Charlie was trained through an organization that helped me train Charlie verses just placing Charlie with me and granting me "custody" not "ownership" of him.

CCI give Yonnet his dog back. If it means keeping his dog on a leash Yonnet says he will adhere to your rules. This just breaks my heart. Dr. Yonnet my heart goes out to you right now.

The Bike Has Arrived

Well yesterday this big truck showed up in front of my house!

Inside was this really big box

I couldn't open it up fast enough

Charlie and I love this new bike. I wrapped Charlie in a blanket so he would stay warm, but he squirmed out of it.

Jack even wanted to go for a ride. I also made Paul (my husband) take Charlie and me for a ride. What a comfortable trip I think I will make Paul take me around all the time.

Madsen Cycles designed this awesome middle seat insert so that Charlie wont fall down in the bucket. Isn't that so thoughtful and awesome?

Charlie loves his new bike- he likes to just sit in the back when the bike is in the house. Isn't that funny? He even growls at Jack when Jack gets near it cause Charlie knows it is his bike.

Meta Penca, a 29-year-old web programmer was the lucky zoo visitor who managed to catch this peaceful bear's morning routine on film. The female brown bear reportedly spent 15 minutes doing a series of poses that seemed quite familiar to a yoga practitioner.

'She held her legs with her hands for a minute or two in a V position and then put them down and relaxed,' Penca told the Guardian.

Today I was sitiing in class and my friend emailed me this. I started laughing out loud-I should not have read it during class. Please read this story. This dog looks to close to Charlie and if he did this I would die a thousand deaths.

First there was Steven Slater, the flight attendant who used an inflatable slide for his job walk-off. Now, the Steven Slater of dogs: a 12-pound Manchester terrier named Mandy who escaped her cage mid-air and went on a biting rampage.
Mandy was on a U.S. Airways flight from Phoenix to Newark when her sedatives wore off. Her owner's seatmate tried to soothe her, causing Mandy to fly into a rage: She broke free of her cage, bit the strange soothsayer, then raced up and down the aisle, eventually biting a flight attendant, causing the pilot to take an emergency landing in Pittsburgh "in the interest of safety."
That's nothing. I once rode an airplane with a class of adolescent boys who went on penis-punching rampage. Since they punched only one another, however, the flight carried on with only one warning from the pilot and a lot of passive-aggressive sighing from onlookers. PS. I have been feeling really stressed out with school and have been feeling a bit "off". I hope I don't have any problems during finals. I know stress and lack of sleep are huge triggers for my seizures so I guess I need to go get a massage or something fun. Oh and my bike has been shipped so hopefully by next week sometime we will have our new bike.

Little Stinker Charlie Pants

Isn't this a fabulous idea for a wedding or a big event? I love the organic, green factor of this design. Actually, I wanted to do something like this for my wedding, so Paul and I got like 6 large square containers and I started growing wheat grass in our apartment. Charlie (my adorable min-pin) had just arrived as our new little addition and so he was confused by all the grass growing in the house. He decided he should pee on it, and pee on it he did. I kept trying to get him to stop, I even moved the grass up on a table, but he just climbed up there and peed. Needless to say I had to throw them all out cause they reeked of dog urine and had dead patches. Thanks Charlie.

This leads me to my grateful moment for today.

I am grateful to remember funny and obscure moments in life and to take the time to laugh, smile, and shake my head.

Charlie Needs a Coat

Help. I want to find Charlie a cute coat that will keep him warm and that he can walk in and not pee all over. Any ideas? Does anyone out there sew and want to make him a custom coat? He is so barrel chested and has toothpick legs and so all the coats I find look ridiculous on him. Plus he hates them. I want this coat for him, but the sale has ended. I don't know where to find it.

You're going to like this story. You're going to be sad that you didn't win, but you're going to like this story.

First - let me tell you that when we do these drawings, they are 100% random. We take every site who links to us during the period of the contest, we put them all on equal footing (each link is one entry into the drawing), and we randomly select one winner. And whomever it is - is the winner, period. We don't sift through and find the one who likes us the most, or whom we like the most - only the random number generator determines the winner.

Which makes the story of today's winner a little extra special.
Today's winner is Leah Stone. When we drew her name, I pulled up her blog and was immediately struck her blog header talking about "a Bicycle Made for Two." I thought - oh cool, a bike lover won the bike.

But the story gets better. You see - Leah wants a bicycle made for two, but not just any bicycle, and not just any two. She has a very special friend.
I'll let her tell the story:

I have never won a contest before so I feel like all the stars have aligned, the heavens have opened, and today is my day. I have been dreaming of owning a cargo bike since I went to Berlin, Germany this past summer. I saw cargo bikes everywhere and would make my group stop every time I saw one so I could take a photo of it. I have wanted a cargo bike so badly and was so determined that I was going to rig a wheelbarrow to the front of my bike if necessary.

Then I saw the Link-Back Madsen Bike contest and my heart fluttered a bit when I saw the picture of the girl with the basket and the lab in the cargo bucket because I thought "Hey that could totally be me." The reason is that I have seizures. Luckily, I have a service dog for my seizures and he goes with me everywhere. His name is Charlie. He is a slightly pudgy min-pin who can give me a 5 min warming before I have a seizure. Anyways, I have wanted to take him on my bike with me when I go to the store or on a ride, but he is too big for a basket on the front. I even bought one of those kid bike trailers to stick Charlie in, but it totally didn't work as he felt trapped and was tossed around a bit. This bike is going to rock mine and Charlie's world. I can now be oh so green. I can finally take Charlie and my bike to the grocery store. I can even put my other dog in the back too.

Thank you Madsen Bikes for making my whole year. Having seizures is a bit of a bum deal, but the fact that I get to ride my awesome bike with my service dog really helps to make it better.
I can not wait for the package to arrive. Merry Christmas to me and to Charlie!
